Preservation

Historic preservation helps tell the story of our heritage. In 1900, the Daughters of the American Revolution purchased Meadow Garden to protect the endangered home of George Walton, signer of the Declaration. With this, the organization began a proud tradition of preserving this historically significant building.

For 120 years, the Georgia State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has maintained stewardship of Meadow Garden. Using the best information, technology, and resources at their disposal to restore this historic structure in accordance with the standards of the day.

In 2021, Meadow Garden was the national first-place winner for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Historic Preservation Project Contest for the Historic Porch and Roofline Restoration Project.

In 2020, the Georgia Trust honored the Georgia State Society with its “Excellence in Stewardship” award. This award recognizes more than a century of stewardship in addition to significant projects recently completed as part of our Meadow Garden Preservation and Restoration Plan.

Since 2018, the Meadow Garden Preservation and Restoration Plan has guided the extensive preservation process required for this historically significant structure.

Work has recently been completed on the restoration of the front porch and replacement of the front porch roofline. This project revealed the front-facing portion of the first-period roof for the first time in more than a century. The historic preservation provides a more authentic representation of the house during the time the Waltons were in residence. Join us to explore the history of the house as we preserve it for the future.
